DELTAS Africa Initiative

About This Program

A pan-African health research and training initiative implemented by the Science for Africa Foundation with funding from Wellcome and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Phase II, which began in 2022/23, funds 14 consortia spanning 75 institutions - 57 African and 18 northern partners - across 36 countries, and is projected to support 200 PhD-level researchers, 111 postdoctoral fellows and 80 senior research fellows. Research areas include infectious and non-communicable diseases, mental health, climate change, antimicrobial resistance and implementation science. Phase I (2015-2022) funded 11 consortia in 54 institutions across 24 countries and trained more than 1,500 undergraduate, master's, PhD, postdoctoral and senior researchers. Fellowships are awarded through the individual consortia rather than through a single central call.
