About This Program

South Africa's national postgraduate funding call, run jointly by the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation and the National Research Foundation for the 2027 academic year. It supports honours, master's and doctoral candidates across Science, Engineering, Technology, Social Sciences and Humanities, and requires a minimum 65% average in the previous degree. Awards are made either at Full Cost of Study - reserved for South African citizens and permanent residents who are financially needy (combined household income at or below R350,000 a year), living with a disability, or exceptional academic achievers - or at Partial Cost of Study, which takes 5% of awards and is open to international students. Applications are submitted only through the NRF Connect system; no manual applications are accepted. Separate NRF-SARAO honours, master's and doctoral streams run on their own earlier deadlines within the same call.
