The scholarship component of the Department of Science and Technology's INSPIRE programme, India's flagship scheme for pulling talented students into basic and natural sciences. SHE awards around 12,000 scholarships a year of Rs 80,000 to students entering B.Sc., B.S., Integrated M.Sc. or Integrated M.S. courses in basic and natural sciences. Candidates qualify either by placing in the top one percent of their Class 12 board, or through a listed competitive route such as a JEE Main or JEE Advanced rank inside the top 10,000, a NEET rank, or an International Olympiad medal. Applicants are 17 to 22 years old. A defining feature of INSPIRE is that it runs no competitive examination of its own to identify talent.
