Doctoral scholarships from New Zealand's MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, worth NZ$38,500 a year tax-free plus all student fees for three years; externally funded positions at partner institutions range from NZ$30,000 to NZ$35,000 a year plus tuition. Applicants typically need a four-year BSc Honours, an MSc or equivalent, with a background in physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering or a related discipline. Scholarships span four research programmes - Reconfigurable Systems (Towards Zero Waste), Future Computing (Low Energy Tech), Catalytic Architectures (Towards Zero Carbon) and the Putaiao Maori Research Programme (Sustainable Resource Use) - with further openings in hydrogen storage materials, superconducting electronics and dairy protein research. Maori and Pasifika students are particularly encouraged for certain programmes. Institute-funded places in established programmes are largely recruited, with externally funded positions available through the Universities of Otago, Canterbury and Auckland.
